Song Year Section Progression
ABOUT

WHAT THIS IS

A hand-built list of songs that are used as the standard teaching example for their progression — the pairings you find in harmony courses and reference works. Every entry is one nobody disputes, and each row names the section of the song the progression applies to and the key that section is played in.

Nothing here is auto-generated. Every chord shown was worked out from the Roman numerals in the song's own key and checked by hand.

The Roman numerals are the point. Once you see that "Let It Be", "Don't Stop Believin'" and "With or Without You" are all I–V–vi–IV, you have learned a pattern you will recognise in hundreds of songs you have never heard. Click any row to see the chords in the song's key — or any key — and hear it.

For a song not listed, work out the chords yourself with the Chord Progression Analyzer. To see every song here that uses a particular progression, pick it in the filter or open the Famous Chord Progressions reference. To move a progression into your own key, use the Chord Transposer.
