ABOUT

HOW THE CHORD PROGRESSION GENERATOR WORKS

Every mood maps to a small set of progression templates written in Roman numerals — the language musicians use to describe harmony independently of key. When you press Generate, the tool picks a template that fits the mood, then builds the real chords by stacking diatonic thirds from the scale of the key you chose. Because the chords come straight from the scale, the result is always in key and always playable.

Seventh chords appear automatically where the template asks for them: stack one more third on a I chord and you get a major 7th, on a ii chord a minor 7th, on a V chord a dominant 7th. That is why the jazz and lo-fi moods sound richer than the pop mood even when the underlying numerals are similar.

The mood templates

Pop / uplifting — I–V–vi–IV and its rotations, the four chords behind a huge share of modern hits. Sad / emotional — vi–IV–I–V and minor-key i–VI–III–VII for a heavier pull. Jazz — ii–V–I with sevenths, plus the iii–vi–ii–V turnaround. Lo-fi / chill — extended chords over a slow ii7–V7–Imaj7 loop. Blues — a compressed I7–IV7–V7 twelve-bar. Cinematic / epic — modal i–VII–VI and i–bVI–bVII motion.

Using it as a random chord progression maker

Choose Surprise me and keep pressing Generate. Each press picks a new template and, where the template allows it, rotates the starting chord or swaps a chord for a diatonic neighbour, so you get an endless stream of fresh progressions that still resolve.

Next steps

Paste any progression into the Chord Analyzer to double-check the key and see the Roman numerals for chords you write yourself, move it to another key with the Chord Transposer, or hear how each diatonic chord sounds with the Scale & Chord Finder.
