Folk & World Music: The Memory of a People

The Power of the Oral Tradition

Folk music is the oldest music category humans have - songs passed by ear across generations, carrying history, grief, joy, and identity. Every culture has it.

THE DEFINITION PROBLEM

The category 'folk music' is, as ethnomusicologist Bruno Nettl observes in The Study of Ethnomusicology (University of Illinois Press, 2nd edition, 2005), profoundly unstable. The original European concept - traditional music transmitted orally within a community, belonging to a people rather than a named composer - was formulated by 19th-century Romantic nationalists who idealized rural peasant culture as the authentic expression of national spirit. This romantic construction shaped the first great folk collection projects: Cecil Sharp's English folk song surveys (1899-1924) and Béla Bartók's Hungarian and Romanian field recordings (beginning 1905). Both Sharp and Bartók were genuinely important in preserving musical traditions that industrialization and urbanization were erasing; both also imposed analytical frameworks that distorted the traditions they were documenting. Sharp's collections sanitized the sexual and violent content of many folk songs; Bartók's taxonomic analysis imposed Western music-theoretic categories on traditions with their own internal logic.

THE AMERICAN FOLK REVIVAL

The American folk revival of the 1930s-60s is inseparable from left-wing politics. John and Alan Lomax's field recordings for the Library of Congress (beginning 1933) documented African American blues, prison work songs, and Appalachian ballads with scholarly care, bringing Leadbelly, Muddy Waters (as a young man), and dozens of other musicians to wider attention. Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl ballads and union songs established the template of folk music as political testimony: This Land Is Your Land (written 1940, recorded 1944) - composed as a direct response to Irving Berlin's God Bless America - is the most explicitly political statement in American popular music disguised as a folk song. Pete Seeger's recordings, organizing, and blacklisting (he was refused broadcast on American television for seventeen years) represent the period's most sustained commitment to music as social activism.

Bob Dylan's electric performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 - received by part of the audience as a betrayal - crystallized the tension between folk music's communitarian, anti-commercial ethic and the individual artist's desire for creative freedom. Dylan's move into rock amplification and lyrical surrealism is the hinge moment of the folk tradition: after Newport, folk music could no longer police the boundaries between authentic and commercial, pure and hybrid.

WORLD MUSIC: A MARKETING CATEGORY THAT CREATED A DEBATE

The term 'world music' was coined in 1987 by a group of independent British record labels seeking a marketing category for non-Western music that had no natural place in existing record store classification. The category immediately became contested: it simultaneously preserved recordings that would otherwise have had no commercial distribution and grouped wildly diverse traditions under a condescending umbrella that reflected the perspective of Western consumers rather than the self-understanding of the musicians. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986) and Talking Heads' Remain in Light (1980, drawing on West African polyrhythm via Brian Eno and Fela Kuti's influence) demonstrated both the creative fertility of cross-cultural collaboration and its inherent tensions around appropriation, credit, and power differentials.

SPECIFIC TRADITIONS

Each folk and world tradition is a sophisticated formal system. The West African griot tradition (Mande, Wolof, Mandinka) represents an oral history practice in which trained hereditary musicians serve as living archives of lineage, history, and cultural knowledge - the music is inseparable from its social function. Indian classical music (raga in the Hindustani and Carnatic systems) is arguably the world's most complex melodic-modal system: each raga specifies not just a scale but specific melodic movements, ornaments, characteristic phrases, associations with times of day and seasons, and emotional qualities (rasas). Flamenco's Romani-Andalusian synthesis (guitar, voice, and dance united in specific forms called palos, each with distinct rhythmic and emotional character) has been practiced with remarkable formal consistency since the nineteenth century while maintaining space for individual improvisation. Irish traditional music, largely decimated by famine and emigration in the 19th century, was systematically revived through the work of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and recordings, creating the vibrant international session culture that exists today. Timothy Rice, in May It Fill Your Soul (University of Chicago Press, 1994), demonstrates through his study of Bulgarian folk music how ethnomusicological field work can document a tradition from within its own logic rather than imposing external categories.

Folk and world music remind modern listeners that human beings have always made music as a means of collective sense-making — processing shared experiences, transmitting cultural memory, and expressing communal identity. The commercial music industry's global homogenization makes the preservation and study of these traditions more urgent than ever. Each regional music tradition carries irreplaceable knowledge about how people in a specific place and time understood themselves and their world, making folk and world music not just aesthetically valuable but historically essential.
