New to Lagos? Here's What You Need to Know

Lagos is Africa's loudest city and the engine of the continent's most commercially successful music industry. Afrobeats — the genre that transformed global pop — was made here: in Alaba Market studios, in Lekki Phase 1 studios, in the recording sessions that produced Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido and the wave of artists now filling arenas worldwide. The city runs on music the way London runs on finance: it is the primary industry, the primary conversation, and the primary reason people arrive from the rest of Africa.

New to Lagos nightlife? The Lekki-Victoria Island corridor is where the formal entertainment industry operates: 1 Medicina, Quilox and DNA are the venues that book the artists you've heard of. For something closer to the roots, Balogun Market in Lagos Island runs street parties and outdoor sound system events on weekend evenings that are free and completely electric. The New Afrika Shrine in Agege — built by Femi Kuti to continue his father Fela's tradition — runs live Afrobeat sets every Friday night and is the single most important music venue on the continent.

Genre diversity in Lagos runs wider than its international reputation suggests. Fuji music (high-energy Islamic Yoruba percussion tradition), Jùjú (the guitar-led sound of King Sunny Adé), Igbo highlife from the east, and the electronic Afrosoul emerging from producers in the Mainland all exist alongside the mainstream Afrobeats export. Gospel music also claims enormous production resources — Nigerian gospel producers are world-class and the concerts massive.

Practical tips for first-timers: Lagos traffic is genuinely difficult — plan events around proximity to your accommodation and leave extreme buffers for travel time. The VGC, Lekki and Victoria Island areas are self-contained enough to stay within. Bolt and Uber operate but surge pricing late at night can be significant. December is Lagos at maximum volume — the Detty December season runs every night from December 20 through January 1. Cloud Atelier tracks Lagos events so you can plan the right arrival window.
